Newman Smith Choir

The legacy of the Newman Smith High School Choral Department is longstanding. A bastion of choral excellence, choirs at Smith have been led by prominent choral directors for over forty-five years including James Sparks, Elizabeth Volk, Robin Brockway-Nichols, and currently, Aaron Cannon-Lucero. These choral music educators have gone on to influence myriad lives through music.

The NSHS Choral Department boasts 7 performing ensembles, including Men's Choir, Cantori, Bel Canto, Varsity Men, Varsity Women, Vocal Ensemble and A Cappella.

Our choirs consistently earn Sweepstakes at UIL contest, as well as "Superior" and "Best in Class" ratings at choral festivals around the state and the nation. In February 2010, the A Cappella Choir became the first secondary concert ensemble in the history of Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD to perform as an invited choir for the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio. Most recently, the Varsity Women's Choir was named "Best in Class" and Grand Champion Runner-Up at the 2014 DBU "Festival di Voce". NSHS Choirs have toured to New York City, Orlando, San Antonio, New Orleans, Branson and Corpus Christi.

"The Voice of Excellence" is consistently well-represented at the Region, Pre-Area, Area, and State level of the TMEA All-State Choir competition. A typical year at NSHS includes 35+ First Division awards earned by NSHS students at Solo and Ensemble Contest. Private voice lessons are offered during the school day from our highly qualified, screened and accredited voice teacher.
